Midnight Sound

The color of water without light.

An exceptionally deep, near-black blue inspired by the cold, seemingly bottomless waters of northern sounds and straits. Beneath heavy cloud and fading daylight, the sea loses its familiar blue, becoming an almost impenetrable darkness. Full story

Diesel Soot

The residue of work.

A warm, industrial black inspired by decades of diesel exhaust, accumulated carbon, and the machinery that keeps working vessels alive. Found on engine-room vents, exhaust stacks, weathered bulkheads, and the walls of old maritime workshops, Diesel Soot draws its character from the oily, uneven deposits left by heat, combustion, and time. Sea Smoke Blue

Where freezing air meets open water.

A dark, subdued blue-gray inspired by the vapor that rises from relatively warmer seawater into bitterly cold polar air. Known as sea smoke, this atmospheric phenomenon creates drifting curtains of mist above the ocean, softening the boundary between water and sky. Full story

Weasel Green

An expedition machine, weathered by the elements.

A muted, utilitarian green inspired by the M29 Weasel, the American tracked vehicle developed during the Second World War and subsequently employed in difficult snowbound and expedition environments. Its compact proportions, practical construction, and military origins made it a distinctive machine of the northern landscape. Full story

Wolsey Cream

Warmth against the cold.

A soft, aged cream inspired by the natural woolen garments of Britain’s historic expedition outfitters. Named for Wolsey, the Leicester hosiery manufacturer whose origins date to 1755 and whose thermal underwear accompanied both Robert Falcon Scott’s and Roald Amundsen’s Antarctic expeditions in 1911. Weather System

The white of the last outpost.

A cool, utilitarian white inspired by the painted infrastructure of remote northern settlements, research stations, and expedition facilities. Corrugated steel buildings, weather-monitoring equipment, insulated shelters, and exposed maritime structures stand against vast expanses of snow and gray sky. Full story

Ice Blink

Light reflected from beyond the horizon.

A luminous, cool blue-gray inspired by the atmospheric phenomenon known as ice blink. In polar regions, distant expanses of sea ice reflect light upward onto the underside of low clouds, creating a pale, distinctive brightness that can reveal the presence of ice beyond the visible horizon. Rain Slicker

The color of working through bad weather.

A rich, weathered golden ochre inspired by traditional maritime foul-weather clothing and the painted equipment of working harbors. Before modern technical fabrics became commonplace, sailors and fishermen relied on heavily treated waterproof garments designed to withstand rain, spray, and relentless exposure. Full story

Twin Otter Red

Impossible to overlook.

A brilliant, high-visibility red inspired by the safety equipment, rescue apparatus, and expedition aircraft associated with operations in remote northern environments. Its name references the de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, an aircraft renowned for its ability to operate from short, unprepared airstrips and, when appropriately equipped, snow and ice. Navigator Red

The working red of the maritime world.

A deep, saturated red inspired by the painted decks, hulls, winches, and structural equipment of working ships. Across decades of maritime service, red protective coatings have become a familiar part of the industrial seascape—scratched by cargo, stained by salt, and worn by constant exposure. Full story

We’ve rendered each color as faithfully as we can, but no screen shows powder coat truthfully — every monitor and phone reads it differently, and daylight against your paint reads it differently again. If you’d like to be certain, order a powder-coated swatch square, cut from the same aluminum as the plates, and hold it against your Grenadier first. The $35 is credited back when you order a set.

Colors vary from screen to screen. A $35 swatch square shows the true finish, and is credited back with your order.
